Slobid Ukraine or Slobozhanshchyna is a historical-geographic region and ethno-cultural region in the eastern part of Ukraine and the border regions of the Russian Federation, the territory of which roughly overlaps with the territory of five Slobid Cossack regiments of the XVII-XVIII centuries, autonomous formations within the Moscow kingdom, and later the Russian Empire. Slobid Ukraine was bordered in the west by the Hetmanship, in the south with Zaporozhye and the possessions of the Crimean Khanate, in the east with the Don, and in the north by Muscovy. It covered part of the Middle Highlands and the adjacent Donetsk lowland, the northeastern part of the Dnieper lowland, and a small part of the Donetsk ridge. Within its modern boundaries, it covers the central-southern part of Sumy Oblast, Kharkiv Oblast, the northern part of Luhansk Oblast and the northeastern part of Donetsk Oblast, the western, eastern, southern parts of Bilhorod Oblast, the southern part of Voronezh Oblast, and the western part of Kursk Oblast. Currently, parts of Slobozhanshchyna are part of the Russian Federation.
